What is a Tag and How Should You Use it?
A tag is a list of keywords that specifically describe your item. You often find them at the bottom of an item listing or blog post and they are commonly used in WordPress websites and on Etsy.
A tag is more specific than a title or category and is used to describe each particular item in greater detail. A tag could be thought of as a subcategory.
Each tag is usually made up of one or two words and is something a person would type in the search box to find your specific item.
Examples of Usage:
If you do artwork for example, you may have a category of oil paintings. The tags you could use would describe the style or the subject of each specific painting. Use different tags for each painting. The tags would specifically describe the style, modern, abstract, etc, or subject, cat, bird, farmhouse, etc.
If you had a website with drink recipes you may have broad categories like alcoholic or non-alcoholic. There would be a large list of drinks in each of these so you would add tags to each specific recipe to break things down further. In this example the tags could describe the type of drink or the key ingredient. The tags could be the terms: hot or cold, frozen, or could list the main ingredients such as peach or strawberry.
Tags can also be the material your item is made of, the key ingredients, the texture or feel, the size, the style, the subject, or occasion. Here are some examples:
Material – gold, metal, stainless, brushed aluminum
Ingredients – chocolate chip, walnut, strawberry, peppermint
Texture or Feel – plush, fluffy, fuzzy, soft
Size – oversized, petite, extra large, plus size
Style – chic, vintage, organic, indie
Subject – farmhouse, bird, dog, barn, landscape
Occasion – St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, Halloween
Tags are another way for people to find you. Since they are specific they can help you get targeted traffic to your handmade items.
